Gov. Mikie has some more explaining to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The U.S. Department of Justice would like some more details on New Jersey\u2019s voter registration debacle in which a \u201csoftware error\u201d reportedly led to some 6,600 noncitizens being added to the Garden State\u2019s voter rolls in 2023 and 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for the DOJ\u2019s Civil Rights Division, is giving New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill and Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell five business days to turn over \u201cadditional information to assess New Jersey\u2019s compliance with various federal statutes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Justice Department previously requested information about New Jersey\u2019s dirty voter rolls in a July 7 letter to Caldwell, who also serves as secretary of state and oversees its Division of Elections. Now, the stakes are suddenly significantly higher.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018Preserve Any and All Records\u2019<\/h2>\n

Dhillon wants the names of the 6,600 individuals identified\u00a0 \u2014 their \u201cfull names, dates of birth, nationalities, residential addresses, and registration dates and locations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sherrill divulged the \u201cglitch\u201d Tuesday at a press conference in which she unironically accused President Donald Trump of making \u201cbizarre conspiracy theories about fraud with no evidence\u201d as the Democrat announced evidence of noncitizens on her state\u2019s voting rolls. She noted that about 400 of the 6,600 foreign nationals went on to vote in New Jersey elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dhillon also wants Jersey election officials to detail to the DOJ \u201cwhen and where\u201d the noncitizens voted and provide the certification and signature, required under New Jersey law, for those who voted by mail ballot.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditionally, please treat this correspondence as a request to preserve any and all records relating to today\u2019s disclosure,\u201d Dhillon wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Justice Department simultaneously offered an update on the new developments to the district court presiding over its lawsuit \u2014 United States v. Caldwell<\/em> \u2014 seeking New Jersey\u2019s unredacted voter rolls.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018Registered Them to Vote Anyway\u2019<\/h2>\n

Like several other blue state governors, Sherrill has railed against the lawsuit, accusing Trump of trying to \u201cweaponize elections for political gain.\u201d\u00a0 New Jersey has rebuffed the Justice Department\u2019s voter list requests, asserting that the state is \u201ccommitted to protecting the privacy of our state\u2019s residents and we will defend against this lawsuit in court.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sean Higgins, the governor\u2019s spokesman, told several media outlets that the Trump administration has a \u201clong history of weaponizing\u201d in attempts to \u201coverturn election results.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cGovernor Sherrill has been clear that she will use all the legal tools available to her to protect New Jerseyans\u2019 personal information,\u201d Higgins said, reiterating Sherrill\u2019s criticism of the France-based software vendor and her Democrat predecessor\u2019s administration. They\u2019re to blame, Sherrill claimed at Tuesday\u2019s press conference.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the tech company, IDEMIA, told the New York Post that New Jersey officials had access to the same information on the noncitizens \u201cbut apparently registered them to vote anyway.\u201d Reportedly, the software the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) used to automatically register individuals to vote when applying for driver\u2019s licenses and other ID failed to block the noncitizens from the list even though the applicants noted on their forms that they were not U.S. citizens.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 6,600 records submitted to the [MVC] and Division of Elections contained correct information according to the design specifications as set out by the state,\u201d Lisa Shoemaker, an IDEMIA spokeswoman, told the Post on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll 6,600 individuals indicated \u2018Yes\u2019 to wanting to register to vote and \u2018NO\u2019 to being a US Citizen,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis information was recorded correctly and always available,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

More than two dozen states and the District of Columbia use similar automatic registration systems, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018Illegally Diluted\u2019<\/h2>\n

Department of Homeland Security reviews found more than 35,000 potential noncitizens on New Jersey\u2019s voter rolls. The DOJ analyzed voter registration data from four states \u2014 New Jersey, California, Nevada and Pennsylvania \u2014\u00a0 and said it found more than 250,000 potential noncitizens on their rolls. In California, the number was nearly 191,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sherrill says her administration has launched an independent investigation. New Jersey Assembly Republican Leader John DiMaio is calling for a thorough audit and new election integrity safeguards.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNew Jersey Republicans have been sounding the alarm for years that the automatic voter registration process at the MVC was highly problematic,\u201d DiMaio said in a press release. \u201cIn 2020 and again in 2025, voters were disenfranchised after the system changed party affiliations. When we questioned MVC officials, they refused to disclose how they safeguard the process. Trenton Democrats have continued to undermine public trust in our elections, and it\u2019s time for change.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Democrats have labeled an election integrity bill \u2014 the SAVE America Act \u2014 \u201cJim Crow 2.0.\u201d They insist that a law aimed at ensuring only U.S. citizens vote in U.S. elections will disenfranchise voters. But that\u2019s exactly what New Jersey\u2019s voter registration \u201cglitch\u201d did,\u00a0 canceling out the votes of some 400 legal voters \u2014 a point Dhillon emphasized in her request to Sherrill and Caldwell.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEnsuring that U.S. citizens\u2019 votes are not illegally diluted by noncitizens\u2019 votes is of paramount importance,\u201d the assistant attorney general wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n
