A recent National Bureau of Economic Research paper found that 20 percent of Americans are exposed to unsafe drinking water. This alarming statistic becomes a vital concern when you consider this water is also tainted by pharmaceuticals, as 68 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug.<\/p>\n

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering tracking microplastics and some pharmaceuticals to update a list to comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act. But it needs one more: mifepristone, the first of a two-drug protocol approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to cause an intentional abortion.<\/p>\n

The pill blocks progesterone, the hormone needed for a healthy pregnancy, and the second drug, misoprostol, causes contractions. Together, these drugs chemically alter the hormones in a woman\u2019s body to end the life of her unborn child and expel it.<\/p>\n

As a result of federal policies under Presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden, chemical abortion pills came to the U.S. market and became readily accepted and deregulated. During lockdowns, the Biden Administration gave a de facto permit for abortion water pollution by allowing at-home pill distribution, without testing or oversight.<\/p>\n

Pill pushers loved it. What a win for abusers, too, who have used the deadly drugs against mothers without their knowledge or consent.<\/p>\n

If you believe the abortion industry\u2019s data from the Guttmacher Institute, more than 6 in 10 U.S. abortions are committed via chemical abortion pills. Using that weak data (because we don\u2019t have a National Abortion Reporting Law), suggests more than 50 tons of chemically tainted blood and placenta tissue goes into our waterways every year. Abortion pill use is much higher in countries with a real reporting requirement, so this number is likely to be even higher.<\/p>\n

It is unlawful for hospital and outpatient medical facilities to dump pathological medical waste into waterways, yet this is exactly what women using abortion pills end up doing. As the American Academy of Family Physicians observes, \u201cHome-based health care can create medical waste which can be hazardous if not disposed of properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

So why shouldn\u2019t the EPA check if we are being microdosed with an endocrine blockers, especially as so many people struggle with infertility \u2014 about 14 percent in the United States and 1 in 6 worldwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization?<\/p>\n

Progesterone not only supports a baby in a healthy pregnancy, but is a crucial hormone men and women need. For men, it helps build testosterone, maintains cardiovascular health, sustains energy and a sex drive, and helps manage cortisol (a stress hormone). For women, ingesting progesterone-blocking chemicals can open a Pandora\u2019s box of health issues that can harm fertility.<\/p>\n

In the past month, 14 state attorneys general asked the EPA to track mifepristone, as did 19 members of Congress. Through Students for Life of America\u2019s (SFLA) efforts, several thousand people across America also demanded this forever chemical be monitored. In the last few years, more than 40 pro-family groups called for the EPA to track mifepristone and sent two bicameral letters to the EPA, including one headed by current Secretary of State Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n

Added to these voices are other professional organizations concerned with women\u2019s health and the environment, such as the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) and the American Conservation Coalition (ACC), which weighed in with medical and environmental concerns.<\/p>\n

When I testified this week before the EPA\u2019s committee looking at whether to track mifepristone, my concerns presented include \u00a0the potential harm to endangered species. More than 1,500 already at-risk animal species can be exposed to and possibly harmed by these endocrine blockers in the water supply. SFLA notes this effect in our citizen petitions to the FDA and in a number of amicus briefs in court cases looking at the deadly harms of the abortion drugs.<\/p>\n

This \u201cmedication\u201d absolutely is primarily an abortion drug. The only other approved use is for a rare disease, Cushing Syndrome, which rarely is treated with a version of mifepristone. According to reporting from\u2009Kaiser, a version of mifepristone under the brand name Korlym \u201ctreats about 1,000 patients in the U.S.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you compare this to the 642,700 chemical abortions taking place each year, it\u2019s clear that water chemical testing checks the impact of a purely federal policy \u2014 at-home use of chemical abortion pills.<\/p>\n

The abortion lobby, desperate to conflate miscarriage and abortion for their messaging, pushes to use mifepristone for miscarriage treatment, even though less than 1 percent of physicians reportedly use it that way, because \u00a0its purpose is to disrupt pregnancy. SFLA has two citizen petitions to the FDA fighting that relabeling occurring without environmental studies.<\/p>\n

The EPA owes it to U.S. states to detail the extent of abortion water pollution, as a federal policy has spilled into the waterways of the nation, potentially damaging human, animal, aquatic, and environmental health. You don\u2019t have to be pro-life to want crystal-clear drinking water. Since the federal government, without 60 votes in the U.S. Senate, \u00a0created and then deregulated a national market for a deadly drug, we deserve to know what we are drinking.<\/p>\n
