\u201cJoe, you did such a great job! You answered every question, you knew all the facts,\u201d then-First Lady Jill Biden told her husband after the infamous 2024 presidential debate against now President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

But Jill has now admitted she didn\u2019t even believe that herself. <\/p>\n

In an interview with CBS News ahead of the release of her memoir Views from the East Wing<\/em>, Jill said she actually <\/em>thought her husband was \u201chaving a stroke.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was frightened, because I had never, ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never,\u201d Jill said. She went on to add, \u201cI don\u2019t know what happened. \u2026 As I watched it, I thought, \u2018Oh, my God, he\u2019s having a stroke.\u2019 And it scared me to death.\u201d<\/p>\n

It scared Jill so much<\/em> that she immediately whisked her possibly stroking husband to an Atlanta Waffle House.<\/p>\n

But according to The Atlantic\u2019s Toluse Olorunnipa, an important goal of the former First Lady\u2019s new book is \u201cdispel[ling] bipartisan accusations that she was a hidden hand covering up her aging husband\u2019s cognitive decline and nudging him to cling to power longer than his mind and body could sustain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs his closest confidant and the person who saw him even when his staff was not around, the former first lady has faced a deluge of conspiracy theories that place her at the center of what critics describe as a grand cover-up,\u201d Olorunnipa wrote. (Notably, Olorunnipa purposely left out the fact that Jill told her husband he did \u201csuch a great job.\u201d)<\/p>\n

But none of it was ever a \u201cconspiracy theory.\u201d Jill herself just admitted that she publicly pretended that her husband did \u201csuch a great job\u201d while privately worrying he was incapacitated. Yet Olorunnipa continued to frame Jill\u2019s upcoming memoir as though she is the victim of a Republican conspiracy theory about her husband\u2019s failing mental health.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the same narrative spouted by other members of the propaganda press for years: Everyone<\/em> \u2014 from the propaganda press to Biden\u2019s own wife \u2014 was the \u201cvictim\u201d of Joe Biden\u2019s sneaky deception campaign to hide his own cognitive decline.<\/p>\n

The narrative features prominently in Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson\u2019s book Original Sin: President Biden\u2019s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again<\/em>, which claimed to expose the cover-up of Biden\u2019s cognitive decline. Notably it was Tapper who accused Lara Trump of \u201cmocking [Biden\u2019s] stutter\u201d when she questioned Biden\u2019s mental health. Two years earlier, Tapper said Biden was \u201csharp \u2026 mentally.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

More examples of Tapper\u2019s involvement in the cover-up can be found in this\u00a0article\u00a0by The Federalist\u2019s Shawn Fleetwood. Thompson once dismissed Biden saying, \u201cGod Save the Queen, man\u201d after a speech on gun violence as just one of \u201cBiden\u2019s weird phrases.\u201d The \u201cphrases,\u201d Thompson said, had been \u201cweaponized by the GOP to insinuate the 80-year-old president is in mental decline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, their book features testimony from an anonymous cabinet member who admitted they \u201cdidn\u2019t have access\u201d to the president \u201cfor months\u201d and that the White House was engaged in a \u201cdeliberate strategy\u201d to keep Biden hidden. In this telling, the \u201cvictims\u201d of Biden\u2019s sneaky deception campaign were his own cabinet members. The other purported \u201cvictims\u201d were the members of the propaganda press.<\/p>\n

Days before the debate, Oliver Darcy\u00a0wrote for CNN: \u201cRight-wing media figures are desperately pushing conspiracy theories about Biden ahead of the debate.\u201d The \u201cconspiracy theories\u201d in question were that Biden is a \u201csenile, mentally incapacitated elderly man who cannot remember what he had for breakfast, let alone run the federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noah Berlatsky of The Independent\u00a0wrote\u00a0in July of 2023: \u201cLet\u2019s fact check Biden\u2019s so-called mental decline\u201d and argued that \u201cquestions about the president\u2019s fitness for office aren\u2019t in good faith.\u201d<\/p>\n

NBC News\u2019 Matt Dixon, Dasha Burns, and Alex Tabet\u00a0wrote\u00a0in October of 2023, \u201cRepublicans float a quiet conspiracy theory that Biden won\u2019t be on the ballot,\u201d adding the theory was \u201ccentered largely on the thought that Biden is too old and not sharp enough mentally.\u201d<\/p>\n

These outlets and reporters \u2014 with innumerable resources \u2014 want you to believe the reason they wrote pieces dismissing legitimate concerns from Republicans was that they were simply unable to uncover the story of a century because they too were deceived by Biden. It\u2019s part of the reason why Tapper and Thompson released their book \u2014 it was supposed to explain away two glaring realities: The corporate media didn\u2019t<\/em> cover the actual story, and when they did<\/em> talk about Biden\u2019s mental state, they did so to smear or dismiss anyone who questioned Biden\u2019s acuity. The propaganda press was actually obscuring its own involvement<\/em> in the cover-up of Biden\u2019s cognitive decline.<\/p>\n

Now, even after Biden\u2019s collapse is impossible to deny, the cover-up hasn\u2019t actually ended; it\u2019s merely moved onto the next phase, that is, pretending that people who outright lied about Biden\u2019s condition were merely victims of a \u201cright-wing\u201d conspiracy. Jill Biden admitting she thought her husband was \u201chaving a stroke\u201d while publicly trying to reassure the nation he was fine only makes the cover-up harder to hide, and yet outlets like The Atlantic are still trying anyway.<\/p>\n
