A federal judge on Friday ordered President Donald Trump to reinstate national park signs that promoted left-wing talking points about things like climate change, condemnation of American historical figures, and LGBT ideology after the administration ordered their removal.<\/p>\n

Biden-appointed Judge Angel Kelley of Massachusetts ordered that the signs and other material be restored by July 3, the day before America\u2019s 250th birthday.<\/p>\n

Trump began the removal in March 2025 with an executive order<\/u><\/span><\/font> titled \u201cRestoring Truth and Sanity to American History.\u201d This order criticizes the Biden administration for its \u201ccorrosive ideology\u201d that characterizes the United States as \u201cinherently racist, sexist, oppressive, or otherwise irredeemably flawed.\u201d The order directed the U.S. Department of the Interior to ensure markers and memorials overseen by the DOI \u201cdo not contain descriptions, depictions, or other content that inappropriately disparage Americans past or living.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several organizations, including the National Parks Conservation Association and the American Association for State and Local History, brought a lawsuit to counter these efforts, which they characterized as \u201cerasure of American history and science.\u201d Democracy Forward, a leftist-aligned legal organization, represented these clients and others.<\/p>\n

The ruling identifies signage removed after Trump\u2019s order, including \u201cportions\u201d of at Grand Canyon National Park portraying \u201csettlers, cattle ranchers, and tourists as negatively impacting the land for their own benefit.\u201d A sign that included a pride flag at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and various signs about things like man-made climate change and \u201cair pollution\u201d were also removed, according to Kelley.<\/p>\n

One sign at Muir Woods National Monument\u00a0stated: \u201cALERT<\/em>: HISTORY UNDER CONSTRUCTION.\u201d The poster \u2014 which was plastered to a trail sign describing the park\u2019s heritage \u2014 highlighted \u201cthe racist ideology of many people who helped to protect this place.\u201d Another edit to the original trail marker specifically criticized the park\u2019s namesake, John Muir, for using \u201cracist language\u201d in his diary. These annotations, which were\u00a0removed\u00a0after a Federalist inquiry, are among the signs that will likely be reinstated under Kelley\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n

In her 63-page , Kelley did not hide her political activism or eagerness to defend promoting woke agendas at taxpayer-funded national parks.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the echoes of abolition in John Brown\u2019s Fort in Harpers Ferry, to the genesis of the modern LGBTQ+ civil rights movement at the Stonewall National Monument, to the retreating ice of Glacier National Park in Alaska, the National Parks preserve the multifaceted and multi-layered history of our Nation, including the good, the bad, and the ugly,\u201d she wrote before lecturing the Trump administration on its \u201cresponsibility to present history in full.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelley went on to the Trump administration\u2019s efforts as \u201ctelling half-truths\u201d \u201cunder the guise of promoting American dignity.\u201d Her order also barred the administration from making any other changes to \u201cinterpretive material\u201d at national park sites.<\/p>\n

The National Park Service is not the only institution that has been affected by leftist ideology in recent years. The Trump administration has also launched efforts to weed out radical leftist propaganda from the Smithsonian Institution museums in Washington D.C., including launching an internal review of museum programming last year.<\/p>\n

Although the Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of the American Latino is still in progress and does not yet have a building, a preview exhibit located in the American History Museum featured propaganda promoting mass immigration and suggesting that founding-era leaders like Benjamin Franklin \u201cfeared non-White immigration,\u201d The Federalist\u2019s Breccan Thies previously reported. Similarly, the American History Museum undermined Benjamin Franklin\u2019s scientific accomplishments, apparently caring more about his ownership of slaves than his achievements.<\/p>\n

Since Trump took office, lower court judges have issued numerous injunctions in attempts to block the president\u2019s agenda. Kelley\u2019s recent decision is yet another case of an activist judge essentially legislating against the Trump administration. The DOI said that Kelley is a \u201cliberal activist judge\u201d in a statement to Fox News, adding that the agency is reviewing appeal options.<\/p>\n
