With\u00a0confirmation hearings for Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche scheduled for\u00a0this week,\u00a0Blanche\u2019s record will inevitably be in the spotlight.\u00a0Among the most promising actions Blanche has taken in his\u00a0current role\u00a0are his\u00a0recent efforts to turn up the temperature on the so-called \u201csanctuary\u201d\u00a0jurisdictions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the Trump administration seeks to carry out its mandate to enforce immigration law, one of the most recurring obstacles thus far has been\u00a0the\u00a0increasing\u00a0presence\u00a0of so-called \u201csanctuary\u201d jurisdictions, where\u00a0state and local authorities pledge\u00a0not to\u00a0cooperate with\u00a0federal authorities in enforcing federal immigration laws.\u00a0At best, these\u00a0jurisdictions\u00a0are\u00a0providing no\u00a0assistance\u00a0to\u00a0the federal government, and at worst, they are openly obstructing federal law enforcement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Not only do these\u00a0jurisdictions\u00a0resist the lawful authority of the federal government on immigration, but they also continue\u00a0to put Americans at risk through\u00a0policies\u00a0that\u00a0favor\u00a0criminal aliens over\u00a0law-abiding Americans.\u00a0For example, Minnesota Gov.\u00a0Tim Walz just\u00a0pardoned a\u00a0convicted Laotian\u00a0child rapist\u00a0in an\u00a0unsuccessful\u00a0attempt to shield him\u00a0from\u00a0deportation.\u00a0Similarly,\u00a0as recently\u00a0shown\u00a0by America First Legal,\u00a0Virginia\u2019s\u00a0Fairfax County\u00a0has continued to release\u00a0illegal aliens\u00a0into the community, even when these aliens are convicted of\u00a0the worst kinds of crimes.\u00a0These are the consequences of \u201csanctuary\u201d policies everywhere they are enacted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

As I have\u00a0argued\u00a0elsewhere in these pages,\u00a0pleas from the federal government to these states and cities to cooperate\u00a0will\u00a0almost assuredly\u00a0prove impotent\u00a0unless\u00a0<\/em>the Trump administration can put\u00a0sufficiently overwhelming\u00a0federal pressure on these\u00a0jurisdictions\u00a0and\u00a0thereby\u00a0coerce them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While Blanche\u2019s actions mark an uptick of enforcement actions from the Trump admin, Blanche is\u00a0merely carrying out Department of Justice priorities that Trump has been\u00a0seeking\u00a0since he returned to the White\u00a0House.\u00a0As\u00a0early as February 2025, the DOJ issued a\u00a0memorandum\u00a0stating that \u201csanctuary\u201d\u00a0jurisdictions\u00a0will not receive access to grants from the\u00a0DOJ\u00a0unless they are compliant with federal immigration law.\u00a0Also, then-Attorney General\u00a0Pam\u00a0Bondi instructed the DOJ to\u00a0identify\u00a0and cut off from departmental funding any non-governmental organizations (NGOs) \u201ceither directly or indirectly\u201d providing services and funding to \u201cremovable or illegal aliens.\u201d\u00a0Lastly, the Civil Division of DOJ was instructed to\u00a0initiate\u00a0lawsuits against \u201csanctuary\u201d\u00a0jurisdictions:\u00a0Blanche is\u00a0currently\u00a0working to implement these indispensable priorities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Recent DOJ Action<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

In the most recent\u00a0filing,\u00a0Blanche\u00a0announced\u00a0a lawsuit against the state of Maryland for\u00a0its \u201cCommunity Trust Act\u201d enacted by the state legislature. Its\u00a0\u201cpurpose and effect\u00a0is\u00a0to obstruct federal law enforcement and thwart the constitutional obligation of the President of the United States to take care that the immigration laws enacted by Congress are enforced.\u201d\u00a0The\u00a0complaint continued:\u00a0\u201cThe Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution prohibits a state from obstructing Congress and the Executive in this manner\u00a0\u2026\u00a0Accordingly, the United States brings this declaratory and injunctive action to prohibit the State of Maryland from enforcing the Community Trust Act, S.B. 791 (2026).\u201d\u00a0It is straightforward that states cannot lawfully nullify, override, or impede the federal enforcement of clearly constitutional federal laws (e.g., immigration laws).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In June, the DOJ\u00a0announced\u00a0a\u00a0suit\u00a0against\u00a0the state of New York for its \u201csanctuary\u201d policies, which included criminally banning federal agents from wearing masks and prohibiting\u00a0cooperative 287(g) agreements\u00a0between federal\u00a0and local law enforcement.\u00a0Federal agents, such as\u00a0ICE and\u00a0CBP, often wear masks to protect their identities from\u00a0swarms\u00a0of\u00a0left-wing activists.\u00a0This is especially understandable given the\u00a08,000 percent increase\u00a0in death\u00a0threats against\u00a0ICE agents\u00a0since Trump returned to the presidency.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Virginia,\u00a0at the behest of the DOJ,\u00a0a federal judge\u00a0enjoined the enforcement of the state\u2019s\u00a0law\u00a0that\u00a0attempted\u00a0to ban federal agents from wearing masks.\u00a0A similar ruling was issued by a federal judge in\u00a0Pennsylvania\u00a0when\u00a0the DOJ sued the city of Philadelphia over a local\u00a0attempt to\u00a0punish federal agents for wearing masks.\u00a0In\u00a0both of these\u00a0cases, the federal judges ruled in favor of the Trump administration\u00a0because they correctly\u00a0stated\u00a0that\u00a0these state laws\u00a0attempted\u00a0to assert authority over federal\u00a0agents, which is unconstitutional, given the supremacy of the federal government over the states.\u00a0It is a relief to finally\u00a0witness\u00a0some\u00a0judicial injunctions being issued on behalf of the Trump administration, given the\u00a0nonstop\u00a0interference\u00a0coming from\u00a0federal judges\u00a0against\u00a0so many actions\u00a0taken by\u00a0the administration.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Promising Convictions<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Also,\u00a0it is encouraging to see\u00a0the federal authorities\u00a0arresting\u00a0and charging\u00a0protesters and left-wing activists who have attacked federal agents or\u00a0issued death threats.\u00a0For example,\u00a0leftist\u00a0rioter\u00a0Nicolas Scelfo was charged\u00a0in June for threatening to kill ICE agents and their families.\u00a0Similarly,\u00a015\u00a0members of\u00a0Direct Action Minnesota, an Antifa-connected leftist front in Minneapolis, were charged for their attempts to impede, injure, and assault\u00a0federal officers.\u00a0These\u00a0leftist\u00a0activities are blatantly illegal, and they should be crushed mercilessly.\u00a0Another encouraging sign is the\u00a0recent\u00a0convictions\u00a0and life prison sentences for eight\u00a0Antifa terrorists\u00a0for their attack on an ICE facility\u00a0and ICE agents last\u00a0summer\u00a0in\u00a0Prairieland, Texas.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

We\u00a0need to see many\u00a0more\u00a0such convictions and punishments\u00a0for\u00a0the criminals\u00a0violently\u00a0resisting\u00a0our patriotic law enforcement,\u00a0who work tirelessly\u00a0to remove the illegal aliens from our country.\u00a0Attacks on federal law enforcement will\u00a0not be stopped by\u00a0appeals to decency, for the domestic terrorists committing these actions\u00a0and the corrupt\u00a0\u201csanctuary\u201d\u00a0politicians enabling them\u00a0have\u00a0no shame\u00a0or decency.\u00a0Instead, they will only be stopped by superior\u00a0force\u00a0from\u00a0the federal government.\u00a0Civil lawsuits against\u00a0state and local governments, as well as criminal convictions for leftist terrorists, are much-needed steps to exert that control.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Left\u2019s<\/strong>and Right\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>Tactic<\/strong>s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

One of the most effective ways\u00a0the left has advanced its agendas politically in America has been to capture the federal government, impose its interpretations onto federal laws and through the courts and federal agencies, and then to\u00a0force state and local\u00a0jurisdictions\u00a0to comply.\u00a0This tactic can be\u00a0seen in\u00a0the\u00a0forced integration of public schools during the\u00a0civil\u00a0rights era,\u00a0the Obama administration\u2019s attempt to\u00a0impose\u00a0\u201cdisparate impact\u201d standards on\u00a0discipline in\u00a0public schools\u00a0and\u00a0its\u00a0\u00a0on colleges and universities\u00a0receiving federal funding,\u00a0the\u00a0Biden administration\u2019s\u00a0crushing \u201cconsent decrees\u201d\u00a0meant to hamper local law enforcement in major cities in the name of anti-racism, and more.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u00a0is\u00a0long past time\u00a0to\u00a0fight\u00a0fire with fire.\u00a0If the right is to succeed in remaking the country,\u00a0we must\u00a0continue\u00a0the\u00a0administration\u2019s\u00a0efforts\u00a0to\u00a0break the power of the left in state and local governments.\u00a0If state and local governments will not protect the rights of American citizens, then it is the federal government\u2019s duty to\u00a0override them and provide that much-needed protection.\u00a0Much more can be done, but we should be grateful that\u00a0President Trump and his DOJ seem determined to fight\u00a0these battles to defend America against\u00a0such treacherous \u201csanctuary\u201d politicians.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
